You are right, NEVER go in the peak of high season (midJune to midSept, and avoid shoulder season if you have a choice.And, to see "the other Italy" stay out of the big cities Travel light, go from small town to small town see the beauty of the coutryside and small towns in Tuscany, Umbria, Sicily, the list could be endless eat in a "tavola calda" (like a cafeteria or places that cater to local workers, where a typical "pranzo" could be 710 Euro for "primo, secondo, contorno, insalata andamp; frutta".Selections might be limited, but the food is usually freshly prepared and very good.And, put lots of sugar in the espresso and maybe a drop of milk (Macchiato as opposed to cappucino, which is about half a cup of milk with a shot of espresso.
