Hi I just returned from my first trip to Italy and like you I had no idea where to stay etc.I am single and 54 and went alone.I searched the internet for weeks and what I thought was a great choice for a hotel was not.I moved after the first night.I was fortunate to find another hotel in more of an area that suited my needs which was about 3 blocks from the Spanish Steps one way and blocks from the Trevi Fountain the other way.I stayed at the Hotel Doge which a nice clean and felt very safe.Right next to the Spanish Steps is the Spagna train stop which is only 3 stops from the main train station " Termini".I bought a 3 day ATAC pass for 11 Euro and could ride the train or any of the city buses as much as I wanted, which turned out to be a incredible bargain.
