ITALY Readers's Tips - In all my years of visiting Venice, I'e never heard of such a thing.ou should pack light and be able to carry your luggage up and down the bridges you may have to cross on the wat from your water taxi or vaporetto to your hotel.

I've never heard anything either, and I had rolling luggage in Venice.As the other poster mentioned, you really want to make sure you can lift and carry it easier over the canals.Some of them have graduated steps, and it can get really heavy, really fast. If you pick a hotel in the Cannareggio district to the eastsoutheast of the train station, you need not worry about heaving bags into vaporetti (boat buses and over bridges, you simply walk a short distance on level ground to your destination. Lista di Spagna and nearby streets are perfect for quick access to trains, to the vaporetti that all stop outside the station, and to the one of only three bridges across the Gran Canal, the one by the train station. Also from Lista di Spagna and further into Cannareggio you have access to Rialto and beyond via streets and canals that keep you away from the deadly main drag the thousands of daytrippers take, the heeltotoe drudgery path, signed in brownish yellow markers, that goes from the station bridge to Rialto and on to San Marco. And yes you can wheel your luggage to your heart's content.

You will not be fined for having rolling luggage.but, depending on where you stay, it's apain in the butt due to all the stairways over the canals.Not sure where your hotel is but I would make sure you land as close to it as possible (it may have a private doock to avoid hauling your luggage over the bridges.
