ITALY Readers's Tips -
and34;as much of the rest of the countryand34; is too ambitious, there is simply too much.
During the week near Bari you could try to get a car for a few days and get to know the region, like drive up to Castel del Monte, to the Grotte di Castellana, and up to Altamura and nearby Gravina in Puglia, and so on.
With just one week after that, you could go over to Salerno and base yourselves there for a few nights, do day excursions to Peastum, the Amalfi Coast, Pompei, Sorrento, the islands of Ischia and Capri, and all that.here are bound to be coach trips you can take so that you don't have to drive the Amalfi coast yourselves any travel office will hook you up, possibly even from Bari if you ask while still over there.
The train from Bari to Salerno takes 5 and189; hours or more maybe there is a quicker bus that you find out about while in Bari
The fast trains from Salerno to Rome take 2 and189; hours, so you can still spend a few days there before flying out again.
Then leave the northern half of the country Siena and Florence and up for another trip.r if you go back to Bari tack on a week in and around Sicily next time.
Just up the road (north from Bari is a real gem of a place called Trani. believe the Venetians had a finger in this city in times gone by and the architecture is fantastic.here's a good castle, plus a cathedral.ery popular over the holiday period with Italians, so just out of season, it offers lots of choice without the crowds.
Michael has covered the other suggestions I'd have, except for the towns around Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca in Trulli country.
We missed out on Castel del Monte, but it looks truly fantastic in pictures.

Pretty much everything in ‘Monumental Rome’ or in the central city center is decidedly on the wellbeaten tourist track. That said, there are alleyways, side streets and little squares in every neighborhood that can make you forget that you are in one of the most visited cities on earth.Rome is a great walking city and if you are willing to utilize the bus/tram/underground system, a very easy place in which to get around.I wouldn’t worry very much at all about ‘safety’ in the N.merican understanding of the term. There is petty theft and there are pickpockets and those who will try to slip you a 5 euro note when you are owed a 10, but there is little in the way of thuggary, mugging or robbery to be concerned with.Use common sense precaution, especially in large crowds (like at the Trevi Fountain at night, on buses, in railway stations, queuing up for tickets, etc.nd you are unlikely to encounter any difficulties at all. If you are going to Rome to see and experience it and its magn
