I think I need to restate my query.Mr.uartz gave us a very clear description of "cuperto" or cover, and I thank him for it.My question really was this: If you receive a restaurant bill without a clearly marked service charge, is it OK to ask in my less than fluent Italian, "E compreso il servizio" (Is service included
This happened three times in about fifteen restaurant meals.Two of the three were outstanding meals at recommended restaurants.All other times there was a clearly marked service charge on the bill.
Did I breach etiquette by asking Was I a dumb Americano When they said "no" I left a good (by US standards tip, because service, food, and ambiance were all very good.Am I too sensitive, obsessing over whether I committed an Italian faux pas by not assuming that, like France, whether clearly specified on the restaurant bill or not, service is ALWAYS included.
