I've been to Italy twice.nce doing the RomeFlorenceVenice circuit by train and once doing the Dolomites and Lake Como by car (as part of a loop that included Switzerland.oth were excellent trips, especially Varenna and Lake Como.ow my wife wants to do the Amalfi Coast in May.he wants a lesiurely pace, probably a sixseven day trip preferably a central location so we don't have to pack and unpack.he postings I've read have been very insightful, so maybe I can get some advice. I forsee a vaction like our time at Lake Como, hiking in the hills, taking the ferry to Bellagio, not straying too far and not rushing to do anything. If you were staying in one place for the whole Amalfi visit to use as a base or just hang out, what town would it be Do you have to have a car to get there (from Rome and see the individual sights and towns (like Capri and Ravello or is public transport (and walking adequate I had no problems in the North driving though parking was never easy, but I hear a lot of stories about the roads and lack of parking in the Amalfi area. Also we have interest in a "villa" or apartment, especially if we have another couple traveling with us, as an alternative to a cramped hotel room.hat is a good resource to find such a place If we go with a hotel I'd wish for something like the Albergo Milano in Varenna: good location, balcony on the lake, decent size room with some character and a king bed and under 200 a night. pipe dream
