Ian I'd be happy to help answer any questions regarding the places we visited We rented a car (the smallest one from Europcar, which was actually midsize compared to most cars on the road and went to: Portofino, Cinque Terre, Lucca, Pisa, Castellina in Chianti (and Chianti/Tuscany countryside, San Gimignano, Siena, Florence, Venice, Verona, Sermione, Bellagio (and central Lake Como region and Milan. The end of May was a great time weatherwise (in the 80s, no rain, sunsets around 9pm, and touristwise, not overrun. Most of the prices in the Cheap Hotel Guide's guidebooks have started to inch up (we had the 2004 editions, I think.Generally at least 1E more per attraction and at least 10E more per hotel room. Also, several hotels that "claimed" to take credit card conveniently didn't when we got there so be aware that some may make you pay in cash. Some of my favorite (cute, boutique hotels were: Ai Do Mori (Venice, 120E double w/ba, Bellagio Hotel (Lake Como, 120E double w/ba owned by Hotel Du Lac.
Your trip sounds great We leave in a week can't wait any restaurants you'd recommend in Venice or Florence
