ITALY Readers's Tips - Colosseum has an audio guide.urchase guide books. always use three: Steve's; Cheap Hotel Guide's, and Lonely Planet.ach gives a different perspective on each sight.ou will have a wonderful time.

[Audioguide Tours] Colosseum; The one they had a couple of years ago was fair, although it's possible that they have a new one. Roman Forum; They had a terrible one for years but now have a new version which is good.ut it still doesn't cover all the sites. You rent the audioguides from a green circular booth just west (40m from the Arch of Titus (not the green entrance booth on the socalled Via Sacra 40m east of the Arch. Imperial Forums; No audioguides but the Tourist Office *once* offered tours thru the *closed* Forums. The tourist office is on 'Via d.ori Imperiali', across the street at a 45deg angle from the Roman Forum entrance on that same street. Vatican Museums; Excellent audioguide. St.eter's Basilica; Has an audioguide but I have never used it. The 'Capitoline Museums' and 'Ostia Antica' have both discontinued their audioguide rentals. The best and most detailed guidebook of the historical sites is the 'Oxford Archaeological Guide Rome'. Regards, Walter for just 15 you can download iPod walking tours from iJourneys.m before you go. They cover what you want.are fun, easy, hip and in American English.he Coliseum aduiotour you get there from the gov't is translated from the Italian and therefore is extremely convoluted and difficult to follow. iJourneys has 2 Rome walks and other Italian tours.e took both and really loved them.ou can listen before you go if you want to get oriented.nd take the walk through the historical center of the city they stop at the best cafes, churches for the art, etc.hey tell you stuff the whole time.t's very easy to follow and the maps are excellent.e loved them and have taken them all over Europe.

A great way to see the sites from the outside is the doubledecker bus..r 12 Euros a day you can get on at one of many stops, get off as often as you like (for example, get off at Colosseum and go inside then catch bus later they have earphones that plug in at your seat and tells you what you are passing/seeing.
