ITALY Readers's Tips - I walked the dome early October and it was great.I didn't do the bell tower however.I imagine there are pros and cons for both. With the dome uou get a nice look of the dome's painting and at the top you get a wonderful view of the whole city.However the dome does have more steps than the bell tower and pexiglass inside can obstruct the view of the painting a bit (but provides excellent safety because I freaked out inside. Personally I highly recommend the dome.It was definitely worth all the steps.

The Duomo gives you a respite on the way up, the path takes you around the insides of the cupola, the vaulted ceiling, and you have awesome views down into the body of the cathedral.o you walk on the flat for a while before doing the last climb up onto the top lookout. The tower is just up and up and up until you get there. Both are great, if the line is much longer for one, pick the other. Like WorldTraveler, I also climbed the Duomo but not the tower.You get really close to the paintings on the ceiling, absolutely aweinspiring.The view is excellent.I loved it.

The best views of the city are from across the river up in the Piazziale Michaelangelo.
