If you prefer humantohuman contact when buying tickets like this, you might want to go to a travel agency while in your first city.Ours didn't charge a fee (I don't think any of them do.We did this in Rome and bought our train tickets from Rome to Florence and from Florence to Venice.It worked out really well for us.We didn't have to wait in the lines or deal with any of the confusion at the train stations, and we had our passes well in advance so we never had to give it another thought. Of course, online booking works well too, but we like the human contact sometimes.
