I always take a carryon suitcase that fits in the overhead compartment and a medium size backpack that fits under the seat in front of me.If the plane is not full, which is unusual these days, I take out a little bag of "travel essentials" to use on the flight and put the backpack in the overhead compartment.When you go through security they will count a fanny pack, small purse, etc.s a third bag so you need to be able to fit it into your backpack.
