ITALY Readers's Tips -
I agree with all your comments completely. It is for this reason my husband and I do no like cruises, a day in each port and I come home with all the stops a blur.
I would like to ask for suggestions on where to go while in tuscany.
my daughter is getting married in September in case cornacchi.e have a day each planned for siena, Chianti, two days for the wedding and the rest of 7 full days to drive around.
we will be staying at fattoria lavacchio(18 am from florencefor a week and have a rental car. definitely would like to go back to florence for even a day which i was told i can get to via train.
any suggestions of what i must see and how long i should stay while in tuscany will be greatly appreciated.
thanks a lot for any help.
Given your location, I'd spend an afternoon exploring Fiesole taking in the view of Florence below. Then you could take local road S2 for a trip to San Gimignano. And not far outside Siena to the west, there's an interesting walled town, Monteriggioni, also on S2.Not alot going on inside the walls but such an unusual setting, it's worth the walk up the hill.
Really, the best thing about being in Tuscany with a car is just pulling out a map and exploring.Go north one day, south the next. You never know what vista is over the next hill, what charming village is around the next corner.
Use the Tusacany forum on Tripadvisor.m.I have planned a 16 day visit using a dozen books and 2 web sites. If you have a car and you want to visit Tuscany, use Cheap Hotel Guide's Driving Tours or Authentic Tuscany by Touring Club of Italy. If you have never been to Florence, take the train and spend an entire day there as long as possible.I would skip Fiesole. It is a nice day trip if you can't get out into the countryside. But since you will be spending time in Chianti/Tuscany, don't bother.SG is better visited late in the day, after the tourists have gone.Use some sources and choose places that appeal to you.Be warned, that though driving is fairly even, it does take time on these secondary roads. There are some good N/S highways that can take save you time at night, in the rain, or when you are just ready to take it easy.
Good luck in your choices. It is hard to go wrong.
