ITALY Readers's Tips -
In a word, yes, Pompeii is worth seeing. It is a reasonable day trip, and you can probably take the train from wherever you are staying.(Without knowing exactly where, I cannot estimate total travel time for you.The Circumvesuviana train ride takes about 3040 minutes from Naples (exit Pompei Scavi.
I was there in '99 and thought it was one of the most amazing places I have ever been.It was practically empty when I was there (early Dec. Definitely a place to see in my opinion
I stayed in Sorrento, a little futher north than Amalfi 2 years ago.e were on a 1/2 day tour in Pompeii.y sister and I opted to stay longer to see more and take the local train back to Sorrento.he train would go on to Amalfi.t was about a 1/2 hr ride from Pompeii to Sorrento and very inexpensive (can't remember the exact amt.e loved Pompeii.t is extremely interesting lots to see. highly suggest a tour or renting the headsets that they offer and do your own tour.
Pompeii is amazing. It's also huge.I heard it's only half excavated, too, so what you can see is only half of what's there.Definitely pick up a tour when you get there (or sometimes you can follow a tour in progress and listen or rent a tape; otherwise you won't know what you are seeing. It's really amazing.you can see the wheel ruts of Roman chariots, see beautiful villas, remains of stores, slave apartments, even a fast food spot from early times. No food now, of course. It's almost unbelievable that this place existed and we can still see how it looked and how people lived. If you can stand it, look at the impressions left by bodies where residents were killed by poisonous gas from the volcano.and look at pottery, decorations, and walls that still show murals painted so many years ago.(There are even a few X rated ones that used to be hidden.Anyway, it's really worth a trip to see this beautiful city from the past and to miss it would be an awful waste.Hope you go and enjoy it.
