You should be fine with shorts that touch the knee.
The only men who I have seen refused entry were men wearing tank tops.
The rules are very strict at St Peter's in Rome; there, trousers have to be almost to the ankle. elsewhere, rules are less strictly enforced. in Rome, a couple of years back, I went to St Peter's wearing kneelength shorts and was refused admission, despite my efforts to loosen the belt andamp; lower the waist line, so as to lengthen the leg; in the end, I had to wait until a pair of "loan trousers" (made out of a sack, I think became available.
We were at St.eter's last week and some men wearing long shorts (to the knee were allowed in.I noticed it seemed somewhat at the guards' discretion; those who looked "sloppy" were refused but neat shorts and a short sleeved shirt were ok.
Unless you are under 12, don't wear shorts into an Italian Catholic church (or any other.t's not about what they will let you get by with, it's about showing respect for the institution.hy make it so difficult Just wear slacks.
