ITALY Readers's Tips -
Have you walked along the "passetto" between the Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican Also, the Castel Sant'Angelo itself has much to offer, including a terrace with lovely views and a small cafe. Here's a link to information about the passetto: http://www.ocities.m/mppollett/vatic12.m
I believe the passetto is now open at limited times for tours.Perhaps other readers have done this and can tell you more about it.
Saw the thread about the Rome train terminal taxi scam. Before that, thought I was all set by just getting a metered cab.So, now I have questions:
1.When I debark from the train in Rome, how do I get to the "legit" cabs.such as, follow signs (that say what; go to a certain exit by following certain signs (what signs."Go to the light" as in the outside
2.Once outside, I realize that I am not to follow the directions of a person trying to get me to a specific cab.So..w do I know which are the legit cabs. Are they waiting next to a sign that says..Is there a certain landmark near them that I can locate
3.OK, once I find what I think is a legit cab, I look on the dash for a meter (like in the U. correct
4.OK, I've found the cab andamp; the meter : Now do I discuss price before I andamp; my bags are loaded Or no need to do so because the meter takes care of that
5.The meter In the U., the meter does not always begin at 0., because of fees.Is the Rome taxi process such that the taxi driver will immediately flip on the meter, which will begin at E0. andamp; then begin clicking euros away Thus, at my destination, I will owe what the meter shows If so, I assume that if the driver does not turn on the meter, I should insist on it being done
6.Do the taxi drivers usually speak English, or at least enough broken English for us to communicate Sadly, I don't speak Italian.
7.Upon concluding the wonderful legit taxi ride, is a tip expected and/or usually given as in the U. or is it in the fare If tip expected, is it the usual 1520% Extra tip per bag
Thanks in advance.Sorry about the folks that got ripped off, but as we all know, such things do happen in many cities across the world, not just Rome or Italy. In 2 U. cities, I knew the path to follow andamp; got taken the scenic route So even with a meter, I got ripped off On the 3rd occasion I refused to be ripped off without a "fight" when I got "switched" from one cab to another andamp; the fee tripled upon arrival.I paid it but only after I got the driver's name, cab , andamp; company phone number from the info on the back of the front seat.Called the company, they came to my hotel w/photos for ID, andamp; gave me all of my money back Next time, I'll also be sure to get a quick photo of the cabbie Happy travels everyone.
I'll do my best to answer your good questions.
1.There are signs inside the train station directing you to the Taxi. There is a signed taxi stand outside the main doors of the train station. You will probably see a line of people waiting. The line m
